Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Rome- family of 15
This was an amazing experience for our multigenerational family of 15. Our tour guide, Dennis, was so knowledgeable and engaging. He immersed us in the history of Rome that got even the youngest of our group inspired. The company was very organized and made this a day we will never forget. I would highly recommend this tour it really was amazing.

This is going to read more of a review of our tour guide Radu than the Colosseum. Radu made the tour memorable. His energy, humor and love for Roman and Latin history differentiates him from all other tour guides. The scenery is amazing and you will get great pictures and see all the things every other tourist sees. Radu brings it to life through his story telling and pure emotion. Best tour guide we’ve ever had and has created a lifelong memory for our family. Thank you Radu!

Excellent tour, well organised and easy to find. George our guide was awesome and it was amazing to hear things about the colosseum from Roman times. It was really hot, need to take water and aim for an early tour.

Small-Group Tour of Colosseum Underground, Arena and Forum
First and foremost -- Guido, our tour guide, was fantastic. His knowledge of the Colosseum was impressive. This is by far a tour I would not miss. We toured under the main level of the Colosseum, the main level, and an upper level. We also toured the Palatine Hill complex and that was impressive too. I highly recommend this tour. Grazie, Guido!

Small-Group Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
On one of the hottest days in Rome, Cristina made the tour exciting, interesting, and fun! She has a wealth of knowledge and provided a lot of historical context of what we were seeing. She also showed several photos to complement her explanations. The tour consisted of Colosseum 1st and 2nd level, arch of Constantine, palatine hill, and Roman forum. Can’t wait to come back!

My family was met at our hotel on time and taken to the colosseum in a lovely air conditioned van. There we met our tour guide Rosie for our private tour. She was great - very knowledgeable and kept us going at a good pace! Definitely a 👍 experience!!!

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
